My brother and I designed and built a rack-mount website server from scratch over Christmas. Ed installed Linux as the main operating system on a Quad-Core Xeon Processor with 6GB of RAM, utilizing RAID 5+1 technology there are 4 redundant hard drives ensuring 0% data loss and 100% up-time. The system also features dual redundant power supplies, hot-swappable hard drives and fans, which allows us to fix any hardware problems without ever turning off the server. We spared no expensive and made sure that this server was powerful enough and expandable enough to last for years to come.

On the software side, my brother utilized a hot new technology called Virtual Machine, which allows us to simulate multiple computers and operating systems on a single server. This allows us the best of both worlds as our server features both a Windows Website Server and Linux Email Server with the latest and greatest e-mail hosting suite Zimbra. The Windows website server all features the brand new Coldfusion 9 allowing me to develop rich internet applications for clients.

Our Zimbra e-mail server is secure and encrypted for our client’s protection. The Zimbra Webmail client is similar in functionality to a Microsoft Exchange server offering shared folders, contacts, calendars even documents between domain users all in a secure encrypted environment. Utilizing Open Office, Zimbra also allows you to create office documents such as spreadsheets and PowerPoint presentations all through the webmail client which means as a client you can access these tools through an encrypted connection from any computer with internet access, no additional software needed. Zimbra is actually capable of replacing both Microsoft Office and Microsoft Exchange as your company’s main productivity suite.

We also decided to host the new server at a data center in Boulder, Colorado. This data center features high-speed dual-internet connections, backup generators and high-tech security but most of all it is completely out of hurricane range ensuring your website and email stays up and running no matter what.
